ABOUT ME
JONATHAN D. GOODHUE Jon Goodhue Design was registered as a business in 2003. I enjoy working closely with clients and helping to create projects that have a lot of bang for the buck. Having spent a fair amount of time on construction crews I work well with contractors and have a lot of respect for builders. It is really quite a challenge to build a project.
MASSACHUSETTS REGISTERED ARCHITECT NO.20365 The final step to becoming an architect is nine exams: approximately 28 hours. It was a long process and a lot of studying. (To check an architect's license go to Mass. Department of Professional Licensure).
INTERNSHIP Before sitting for the exams, a prospective architect completes a 5,600 hour internship working for an architecture firm, about three years. The hours must cover 16 areas of expertise; one cannot just run errands and empty wastebaskets for three years. Most of my internship was spent at Beacon Architectural Associates, a medium sized Boston firm founded in 1963. I was lucky to work with some very talented architects whose attention to detail is impeccable and professional knowledge boundless. Most of my experience was working on residential and university projects.
SCHOOL
I earned my Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1997 at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (California Polytechnic State University), a technically rigorous degree in a well rounded program that included structural engineering, landscape architecture, city planning and construction management. My fifth-year thesis was to plan and design a group home for adolescents. I met and worked with a local company that runs group homes; it was a very rewarding experience.
MILITARY
I spent 4 years in the Air Force; mostly at March Air Force Base near Riverside, CA. I worked as a carpenter and in medical records; in my spare time I restored a 1967 Mercury Monterey and explored Alta and Baja California. I was honorably discharged in 1988.
HOMETOWN
I grew up in Topsfield, MA, an woodsey town rich in first period (1625-1725) houses. In my teens I had the good fortune to work for a family friend who was building a passive solar house. My folks still live in my childhood home which over the years has been subjected to numerous construction/design projects by their architectural son.
CURRENTLY
My wife and I have lived in Roslindale since 2002. When I'm not practicing architecture, I enjoy exploring urban places and seeing great architecture.
I have been affiliated with the following organizations: - Citizen Advisory Group for the City of Boston's "Planning and Rezoning Roslindale" project - Arnold Arboretum - Historic New England - Walk Boston - Boston Natural Areas Network - Roslindale Green and Clean - Larz Anderson Auto Museum - Jamaica Plain Open Studios
