NEXT GENERATION SOFTWARE
2D computer drafting was a big step forward from the olden days of hand drafting but was still essentially lines drawn on paper. The problem was that architects had to transform their three dimensional ideas into two dimensional drawings; then builders had to transfer these line drawings back into three dimensions again. Enter "BIM" software, i.e. Revit or Archicad, where we create a three dimensional digital model that can be viewed and analyzed in any number of ways. The client has a better idea what they're looking at, the builders have more confidence that all the parts fit together, and quality control is much improved. The digital building model can be analyzed for energy usage, material quantities, plant management uses and many more things. I began using Revit for most of my projects in early 2008.
